Burra Beret ~ Papil Colourway
The beret is a stranded knitting design, worked from the bottom up, using one or two shades of yarn in each round. Please note: There are three rounds on the crown which are knitted using three shades ~ rounds 15, 19 & 21. Knit the three rounds in the usual way, carrying floated yarn of two shades, rather than one shade.

Materials
3.00mm circular needle (40.00cm), 3.50mm circular needle (40.00cm), 3.50mm dpns (double pointed needles) length 20cm & a darning/tapestry needle.

Yarn
Jamieson’s of Shetland 2 ply jumper weight 100% Shetland wool yarn ~ can use an equivalent 4 ply jumper weight yarn. If using an alternative yarn, check the tension is equivalent to Jamieson’s 2ply Spindrift 100% real Shetland Wool.

Inspiration for the pattern: Burra is an inhabited island in Shetland, where my Mam was born and lived until adulthood. Papil is a settlement towards the southern end of the island. Pictish sculptured stones were found in the churchyard, including the ‘Papil Stone, now in the National Museum’. My Mam was laid to rest in the Papil cemetery in Feb 2024, alongside her parents, my Grandad & Nana Tait, all who have been inspirations for my Burra berets.
