Nort Ness Fingerless Gloves
A stranded Fair Isle influenced knitting design, worked from the cuff up in the round, using a maximum of two shades of yarn in each round.
Size:
Small to medium hand size (hand circumference above thumb 19 – 21cm, length 18cm)
Depending on your personal sizing preference, the same pattern can be knitted following needle recommendations, or by sizing up, for a roomier fit.
Materials:
Fitted style: one set of 3.00mm (20cm long), dpns (double-pointed needles) and one set of 3.50mm (20cm long), dpns (double-pointed needles). Or needles you prefer, for small circumference knitting.
Roomy Fit: one set of 3.50mm (20cm long), dpns (double-pointed needles) and one set of 4.00mm (20cm long), dpns (double-pointed needles). Or needles you prefer, for small circumference knitting.
A darning/tapestry needle, contrast waste yarn for the afterthought thumbs, two stitch holders when holding the stitches for the fingers (I like to use two circular needles) and stitch markers.
Yarn:
Jamieson’s of Shetland 2 ply jumper weight 100% Shetland wool yarn ~ can use an equivalent 4 ply jumper weight yarn. If using an alternative yarn, check the tension is equivalent to Jamieson’s 2ply Spindrift 100% real Shetland Wool.
Nort Ness, in Shetland dialect, means North Headland. Design inspiration came from Shetland’s geographical position, located in the North Atlantic, surrounded by sea, with about 100 islands (less than 20 inhabited). There are many headlands around Shetland’s coast, with Eshaness being one of the most dramatic and well-known. There is a Fair Isle star motif, influenced by traditional Shetland patterns and knitting techniques.
