This pattern is part of the Caldera Collection.

The Caldera Mittens and Fingerless Mitts are elegant, thoughtfully designed accessories inspired by the quiet strength of nature — calm on the surface, powerful underneath. Gentle colour transitions and clean lines create a soothing, rhythmic fabric that feels both comforting and refined.

The folded cuff with subtle colourwork adds warmth and structure, while a delicate lateral braid marks the transition to the smooth stockinette body. This contrast between texture and simplicity gives the design a distinctive yet understated character that highlights the beauty of the stitches and colours.

Designed for both style and practicality, the pattern includes instructions for full mittens and fingerless mitts, making it easy to choose the version that suits your needs. Whether worked in soft neutrals or bold contrasts, Caldera Mittens and Fingerless Mitts are timeless accessories that pair perfectly with the rest of the Caldera Collection — and are just as striking on their own.

The pattern was tech-edited by Marie-Eve Wedge and test- knitted by a wonderful group of knitters.

SIZING:
The pattern is written for sizes 1 (2; 3), which correspond to Women’s Small (Medium; Large). Size 2 also corresponds to a Men’ Small, while size 3 corresponds to a Men’s Medium.
Choose a size that provides between -1 cm and +1 cm / -0.5” and +0.5” of ease, depending on your preferred fit (negative ease for a snug fit, neutral ease for a close but comfortable fit, or positive ease for a slightly looser fit).

To fit hand circumference at the widest part of the palm, excluding the thumb: 17-19 (19-21; 21-23) cm / 6.75-7.5 (7.5-8.5; 8.5-9.25)“.

Finished hand circumference: 18 (20; 22) cm / 7.25 (8; 8.75)“.

Finished length of the mittens measured from the beginning of the cuff: 23 (24; 26) cm / 9.25 (9.5; 10.5)“.

Finished length of the fingerless mitts measured from the beginning of the cuff: 18.5 (19.5; 20) cm / 7.5 (7.75; 8)“.

YARN:
A heavy fingering-weight and a lace-weight yarn are held together throughout the whole project. Alternatively, a single strand of DK-weight yarn can be used.

For my mittens sample, I used Drops Baby Merino (50 g = 175 m / 191 yards; 100% superwash extra fine Merino), in shades 01-white as the main colour and 25-lavender as the contrast colour; held together with Drops Kid-Silk (25 g = 210 m / 230 yards; 75% mohair, 25% silk), in shades 01-off white as the main colour and 11-lavender as the contrast colour.

For my light-green / brown fingerless mitts sample, I used Drops Baby Merino (50 g = 175 m / 191 yards; 100% superwash extra fine Merino), in shades 58-pistachio ice cream as the main colour and 17-beige as the contrast colour; held together with Drops Kid-Silk (25 g = 210 m / 230 yards; 75% mohair, 25% silk), in shades 47-pistachio ice cream as the main colour and 35-chocolate as the contrast colour.

For my off-white / light-blue fingerless mitts sample, I used Drops Lima (50 g = 100 m / 109 yards; 65% wool, 35% alpaca), in shades 9025-chalk as the main colour and 9027-light-blue as the contrast colour.

For my husband’s dark-blue / light-green fingerless mitts sample, I used Drops Merino Extra Fine (50 g = 105 m / 115 yards; 100% superwash extra fine Merino), in shades 20-dark blue as the main colour and 26-pistachio as the contrast colour

You will need for the mittens or for the fingerless mitts:
Drops Baby Merino: main colour: 1 (1; 1) ball, contrast colour: 1 (1; 1) ball,
held together with:
Drops Kid-Silk: main colour: 1 (1; 1) ball, contrast colour: 1 (1; 1) ball.

If you want to use different yarns for the mittens, you will need approximately:
Main colour: 120 (135; 160) metres / 130 (150; 175) yards;
Contrast colour: 35 (35; 40) metres / 40 (40; 45) yards;
of both a heavy fingering and a lace weight yarn if working with 2 strands, or of a DK weight yarn if working with a single strand.

If you want to use different yarns for the fingerless mitts, you will need approximately:
Main colour: 105 (120; 135) metres / 115 (135; 150) yards;
Contrast colour: 35 (35; 40) metres / 40 (40; 45) yards;

22 stitches and 25 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm / 4” x 4” on 4.5 mm / US 7 needles in stockinette stitch in single-colour (in main colour) and on 5 mm / US 8 needles in colourwork, worked in the round, after blocking.

NEEDLES:

  • 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles of 80 cm / 32” for the main fabric in single-colour or needle size needed to reach gauge.

  • 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needles of 80 cm / 32” for the lateral braid or needles 1 mm smaller than the main fabric in single-colour needles. These needles are also used for the simple I-cord bind-off for the fingerless mitts.

NOTIONS:

  • 5 mm / US H-8 crochet hook for the provisional cast-on. The size of the crochet hook is not overly important, but it should be similar to the needles used for the colourwork.

  • Waste yarn to place stitches on hold.
  • 1 stitch marker.
  • Tapestry needle.
