Chibi Witch Hat
✧༺∞ chibi witch hat ∞༻✧
a witch hat on the shorter side. it’s made with a double-weight raffia yarn and a smaller hook, resulting in a dense yet lightweight texture that stands up straight.
if you’re not used to crocheting densely, let alone with raffia, this could prove a bit of a workout for you. i suggest brewing a potion (aka herbal tea) before you start, so you can take breaks and stay hydrated along the way :)
✧༺∞ overview ∞༻✧
the hat is made in the round from the top down, starting with a magic ring. increases are worked continuously until the working edge reaches your desired size. see section “size guide” for notes on sizing.
at this point we transition to the brim by crocheting through the front loop only. this helps achieve a sharp angle and proper look of the brim. from here the brim is worked outward as far as you like.
there are 2 important finishing steps. first, a crab stitch is worked while carrying craft wire along, which helps the brim to stay flat. second, a cord is threaded through the stitches at the brim transition. this helps keep the brim angle looking crisp.

yarn & hook
for the same look as my hat, you’ll want a cone of “manila hemp double” from marchenart yarns. note that this yarn is not listed in ravelry -- if you can’t find a cone you can just use “manila hemp bulky” held double. you can also use a different raffia yarn, but try hitting gauge (with 2 yarns held together if need be) so you get a dense texture that stands up properly. you could also use a different fiber altogether! just make sure your swatch is quite stiff, not floppy at all — unless you want your witch hat to be slouchy.
