Chickadee Potholder

This pattern is an easy weekend project that uses small quantities of cotton #3 yarn in as few as two (up to five) colours. Charts are provided for the two images shown on the cover page. Worked in HDC. Chain one or two at the ends according to your preference. Sample has one loose ch at ends.

This project is stitched tightly to provide the greatest heat protection and moisture absorption. Alternatively, you may make one side and use it as a dishcloth. Or, do both for a matching set!

Pattern charts created with Stitchfiddle Software. Current version has been updated to also include written instructions.

NOTE: This pattern does not count the turning chain as a stitch. Do the chain, then HDC in the first st of the previous row. As an alternative, you may prefer to count the chain as a st and start the HDC in the second stitch of the prior row. This is a personal preference and the latter has not been tested for this pattern.

Materials:

  • 3.25 mm hook
  • #3 cotton yarn: 50g of background colour for each side (sample shown has white background on one side, gray on the other)
  • Scrap quantities of up to five colours total
  • Finished sample is 128g, 9 ¼” x 8 ½”

Stitches:
ch chain
HDC half double crochet
TSC twisted single crochet (optional)
FHDC foundation half double crochet (optional)
