Clipper is a design built directly into CustomFit, which means that each Clipper pattern is written specifically to your choice of silhouette, gauge, and size.

Clipper is my make. wear. love. fall 2017 sweater retreat design using our vendor Indigodragonfly‘s yarn - this time, their beautiful DK Matter. I used the colors “Hand of the Herzog” (MC) and “Tapenod” (CC). Kim is intensely creative, passionate about color, and loves asymmetry. So I reached a bit outside of my comfort zone with this design, and created something inspired by her.

I used short rows and a bright pop of CC to make asymmetrical, striped sleeve cuffs and button bands. You work the outermost curve of the sleeve cuff first, with little insets of CC; the inner curve of the sleeve is then picked up and worked in solid CC down to the wrist, on the inside. The two sleeves are identical, so you get a pop of CC on the front of one sleeve and the back of the other.

I echoed that asymmetry is echoed on the button band by working it in two pieces that overlap at the back neck. Both sides use short rows to shape the band, but only one side uses CC in the short row wedges.

I loved working with the DK Matter. For this sample, I knit it at a pretty firm gauge, to give some stiffness to the fabric. I’m excited to knit it up a touch more loosely, too, for my next version of this design.

You can make Clipper in any silhouette that you like, thanks to CustomFit’s new “select your silhouette” feature.

At my firm gauge of around 6 stitches to the inch, a standard size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ sweater will use up 5 (5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10) hanks of MC and one of CC.

One more note on yardage – while I’ve given approximate quantities for standard size sweaters, CustomFit will make Clipper in the size, silhouette, and gauge of your choice. And it’s pretty tough to give yardage requirements for any possible combination! If you’re not using the recommended yarn, and/or you’re not a standard size, I recommend Hannah Fettig’s amazing app, stashbot, to get a sense of your yardage requirements.
