About this design

Star light, star bright,
The first star I see tonight;
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

If your wish is to have a constellation of stars to adorn your neck and shoulders, then you can’t go past the Constellatio Cowl. The star motif that makes up the Constellatio Cowl is a little bit different because it includes treble clusters that are oriented in a different direction than the other stitches. These changes in stitch direction, plus the beautiful negative spaces between the motifs, give the fabric of the cowl a combination of lacy loveliness and visual interest.

The motif is lovely enough that a Constellatio Cowl worked in a single colour would look spectacular. The motif also lends itself to either a two colour or multiple colour treatment, so versatility of colour use is another good reason for making this gorgeous accessory.

The Constellatio Cowl is generous in its dimensions, which means that it can be worn around the neck as a long-looped scarf, or wrapped twice around the neck to provide a luscious and snuggly cowl.

Tension
A single blocked hexagon crocheted with a 3 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) hook measures 6.4 cm/2 ½ ins when measured diagonally from corner to corner.

Yarn
This design requires a range of colours in fingering/4 ply weight yarn and the yarn amounts needed for each colour will vary from project to project. For a single hexagon, you will need:

• 2.14 metres/2.3 yards for the centre disc.
• 3.2 metres/3.5 yards for the hexagon edge.

The finished Constellatio Cowl contains 162 completed hexagon units, which means that you will need a total of:

• 347 metres/373 yards for all the centre discs.
• 519 metres/568 yards for all the hexagon edges.

The sample Constellatio Cowl used a total of 19 colours, all drawn from leftovers in my stash (3 shades of yellow, 10 shades of green, 3 shades of blue, 2 cream/green mixes, and aqua as the main colour). The main colour is Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4 ply in shade Aquarium. I used 160g from a 200g ball.
