April 2025 update:

NEW SAMPLE USING SPINCYCLE YARNS DYED IN THE WOOL!!
Colorways used:
Main Color “Sunset Strip” (discontinued)
Contrast Color “Mzuzu”

The hat comes out slightly larger if you follow the instructions exactly, because DITW is a slightly heavier weight than Chroma Fingering. The difference between the two samples is about 1” larger diameter & 0.75” longer length.

The colorway “Sunset Strip” has been discontinued, but think of the possibilities with the Dyed in the Wool color range! “Reckless Abandon”, “Soft Power” or “Vellichor” could be fun alternatives.

Use code “COUCHER” to buy either the “Coucher du Soleil” hat or the “Coucher de la Lune” glove pattern, and get the other for just $1!

Description:
Coucher du Soleil is a slouchy, beret-style hat featuring an original Art Nouveau Fair Isle pattern paired with Chroma’s slow color-changes to give the illusion of bare branches silhouetted against a stunning sunset, or “coucher du soleil” à la Française!

Pattern is written for one size, average adult 21”-23” head diameter. Includes written directions and chart for color pattern.

Yarn requirements: This hat is knit in the round and requires two colors of yarn, preferably one that is color-changing for the background color (Chroma or Dyed in the Wool) and one that is solid color (Stroll). Pattern uses about ½ of a skein of each yarn.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The original sample Chroma colorway “Smoothie” is no longer available from Knitpicks, but pattern will work with any other slow color-changing yarn. You could could try working it with 3 colors of Knitpicks Palette as the background color: “Mai Tai Heather”, “Orange” & “Conch” to get a similar effect.

Alternately, this hat looks great using two contrasting solid colors or a tweed as the background color. One pattern tester used Stroll Tweed in “Wellies Heather” and it looks like a starry night sky!
