This is a most versatile hat pattern. It allows you to create a ponytail in the back, messy bun, or traditional fit from the same pattern. The pattern includes a variation on the crossed double crochet stitch, so it is best if you have a little experience with this technique, including front post double crochet and working a stitch 2 rows below. Also, because the body of the hat is worked in rows instead of in the round, it is slightly less stretchy. If you work tightly or want a roomier hat, I suggest using a larger hook size for the main part of the hat.

The inspiration for the pattern is a variation of the crossed double crochet stitch found in The Harmony Guides 300 Crochet Stitches Volume 6. It creates a more textured design than a traditional crossed double crochet stitch.
