My husband loves to watch car review channels on YouTube. Eavesdropping on these shows has taught me the concept of the ‘daily driver’: the practical car that meets your needs that you can use for everyday life. (As opposed to the weekend car that is all style and can’t carry a bag of groceries.)

Daily Driver is meant to be just that, but for cardigans. It’s the layer that can be worn anywhere that you go. It has some of the beautiful lines of the summer sports car too, so you don’t need to sacrifice style to be warm. If you’d prefer the attention that a weekend car can bring, choose a colour with some extra flash. Volcano Orange or Acid Green, anyone?

Daily Driver is worked top-down. The back yoke is worked first. The back neck width is cast on, then increases occur until the cross back width is reached. The left and right fronts are picked up from the back yoke shoulder edge, creating a diagonal seam on the back shoulder. The fronts and back are worked separately to the underarm, then joined to work in one piece back and forth with A-line increases.

When the start of the pocket is reached, the pockets will be worked separately first. Stitches will then be picked up from the underside of the pockets to extend the sides of the cardigan in behind the pockets. The three sections will be joined together again so the bottom hem can be worked in one piece.

The sleeves are picked up from the armhole edge and the shoulder cap shaped with short rows. The sleeve is knit top-down and in the round to the cuff.

The collar is picked up from the neckline and worked double. The buttonbands are worked last.
