Denby Dale Hat is a ribbed hat with a generous turn-up brim and distinctive crown lines formed by stitch transfers. Its name refers to the Yorkshire village of Denby Dale, where the Hinchliffe yarn chosen for this design is made.

Choose a simple, single-colour version that lets the crown shaping take centre stage, or add plating and a decorative band created with manual stitch transfers.

The hat is knitted from the bottom up in 1×1 rib on a standard gauge machine with a ribber. The crown is worked in three sections and joined at the top while still on the machine. Small openings at the sides of the crown and the centre back seam are then sewn by hand.

The pattern includes written instructions, diagrams, video tutorials and guidance on adjusting the hat to your own measurements and gauge.

Sizes
To fit head circumferences of 52–55 (56–58, 59–61) cm.
Finished height with the brim turned up: 22 (22.5, 23) cm.

Yarn
Z. Hinchliffe Lambswool, 100% lambswool, 2/17, 850 m per 100 g, knitted with 3 strands held together.
Combined length: approximately 283 m per 100 g.
Allow 110 (120, 130) g.

Gauge
34 stitches × 44 rows = 10 × 10 cm in 1×1 rib, measured relaxed after washing and drying.

Equipment
A standard gauge knitting machine with a ribber, transfer tools, a latch tool and fine circular hand knitting needles for temporarily holding crown stitches. The decorative plated version requires a machine that supports plating.

Experience level
Suitable for machine knitters who are confident working with both beds and transferring stitches. The crown shaping requires care and precision; the accompanying videos demonstrate the key steps.
