During a summer vacation, I visited Deventer with my family: a Hanseatic city with a beautiful city center, characterized by a wealth of culture and charming shops. In several streets, the sky was filled with colourful umbrellas: these were the inspiration for the Deventer Scarf. I also bought the yarn I’ve used for the scarf in the picturesque city center.

The nice thing about the slipped stitches in this scarf is that it looks like you’re knitting stranded colourwork; but actually you only knit with one colour in each round.

Notes:

  • This pattern is for a scarf, worked in a slipped stitch pattern, using four colours, worked in the round on a circular needle.
  • The pattern uses the Turkish Cast On at the start and the Kitchener Stitch for closing the stitches at the end. Video tutorials are provided. A video tutorial on how to twist yarns when changing colours and how to carry yarns up on the side, is also provided. Tutorials are in Dutch; use subtitles or auto dubbing in the language of your choice, if needed.

Yarn:
Sample used:
- Holst Garn Coast in colours Geranium (colour A), Ecru (colour B), Kingfisher (colour C) and Solar (colour D), 50 grams (350 metres), 55% merino lambswool, 45% cotton. Yarns are held double throughout the project.
appreciate. 630 metres in each colour.

Or use a sport weight yarn held single that gives the right gauge.

Make sure the contrast in colours is high enough to make the contrast between the colours stand out. A little trick to check if your contrast is high enough: lay out your yarns and take a black and white picture. When you see different shades of grey: your contrast is high enough. If you are not seeing any difference between the yarns, the contrast is too low.

Needles:
4 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 100 cm circular needle for knitting magic loop in the round.
If you’d like to knit the main part of the scarf in the round without magic loop: use a 4 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 30 cm circular needle.
Note that magic loop on a long circular needle is needed for the Turkish Cast On at the beginning and Kitchener Stitch at the end.

Notions:

  • 1 stitch marker (closed, matching your needle size) to mark the beginning of your round when using a 30 cm circular needle for the main part of the scarf
  • 1 stitch marker (opening) to mark the beginning of the round when casting on
  • tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
  • wool wash, blocking mats and T-pins for washing & blocking
  • measuring tape

Gauge:
25 sts x 40 rounds in slipped stitch pattern (knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm.

Sizes:
One size, adjustable.

Width (flat): 20 cm.
Length: 200 cm.

Measurements after washing and blocking.

You can widen or narrow the scarf easily by casting on more or fewer stitches (multiple of 4) and/or add/subtract length by knitting fewer or more rounds (multiple of 4). Please note: if your gauge is off, or if you choose to knit fewer or more pattern repeats and/or rounds, you’ll need less/more yarn and the finished measurements will be different.
