A cold, dark January morning had me reaching for a warm cushy wool yarn to knit a comforting cowl for my dog walking. I wanted a cowl that could wrap around my head when a strong wind blew.

This Cowl is a highly textured, reversible cowl in 2 sizes. The large size (pictured) can be wrapped around your neck twice and around the head. The small cowl covers your whole neck to keep you warm. The cowl is knit from the bottom up and in the round. Difficulty level is advanced beginner. It is a fast and easy knit. Gauge is 14 stitches and 18 rows 4 inches.

Finished Sizes:
Large: 10.5 in./27 cm. in height by 48 in./122 cm. in circumference
Small: 10.5 in./27 cm. in height by 24 in./61 cm. in circumference

The gauge is 14 stitches and 18 rounds to 4 in./10.16 cm.
You should block only to relax the yarn and stitches. Cowl stitches should not be stretched because this would cause the loss of the 3-D pattern.

The pattern has been test knit by Ravelry volunteers. This pattern is charted and written out.

Yarn: Yarn is Bulky weight 7-8 WPI and 100% wool, washable wool, wool blends, alpaca or acrylic if you prefer. Samples were made using 3 different bulky yarn from 3 manufacturers. All yarn worked well. The large circumference cowl needed 350 yd,/320m. - 400 yd./366m of yarn. The small circumference cowl needed 175 yd./160 m. - 200 yd./183 m. of yarn.
