When I am knitting on my patterns, I love to listen to my favorite songs. While knitting this shawl, Easy Now by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was on constant repeat. There is something in the smoothness of the music and emotion in the lyrics that makes me feel at ease every time I listen to it.
Knitting on this shawl gave me the same feeling of ease: the pattern repeat is simple, yet it gives just enough challenge to keep you alert. The softness of the combination of the two yarns I used, was a real pleasure to work with. The picot bind off gives the shawl a very sophisticated look. This is that shawl you’ll wear again and again when going to festive events outdoors, where you want to wear a pretty shawl, while at the same time feeling very much at ease in what you are wearing.
Notes:
- This pattern is for a top-down triangular shawl.
- The lace stitch section contains both written instructions and a chart.
- Read the chart from right to left on RS rows and left to right on WS rows, working from bottom to top.
- Pattern contains some helpful video tutorials in both Dutch (NL) and English (EN).
- New to knitting a top-down triangular scarf and/or reading an English knitting pattern? Yarn:
170 grams (715 meters) of fingering weight yarn, held double with 100 grams (840 meters) of lace weight yarn.
Or:
270 grams (800 meters) of DK weight yarn.
Sample used:
Durable Soqs, 289 Blue Grey. 50 grams (210 meters), 75% wool, 25% nylon held double with Mohair by Canard Brushed Lace, 3012. 25 grams (210 meters), 72% kid mohair, 28% mulberry silk.
Needles:
4.00 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 100 cm (or bigger) circular needle.
Notions:
- 2 stitch markers (closed, matching your needle size)
- tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
- wool wash, blocking mats and T-pins for washing & blocking
Gauge:
18 sts x 30 rows in stockinette stitch (washed & blocked) = 10 cm
Gauge isn’t super important for this pattern. You can customize the shawl easily by knitting fewer or more shawl body pattern repeats. The most important factor is that you like the drape and feel of the fabric: not too tight and not too loose.
Please note: if your gauge is way off, or if you choose to knit fewer or more pattern repeats, you’ll need less/more yarn and the finished measurements will be different.
Finished measurements:
Wingspan length: 155 cm.
Length from CO to BO edge, measured along center spine: 75 cm.
Measurements after washing and blocking.
You can customize the shawl to any size by starting the border after any shawl body pattern repeat. Make sure to end with a lace stitch section, before staring the border.
