The fourth piece in the By a Lady collection, the Elinor Scarf, adds a beautifully classic and symmetric vibe to the line. Its center features a gorgeous, diamond-shaped lace pattern that looks intricate but is incredibly soothing and rhythmic to knit. Like its sister patterns, it is bookended by clean garter stitch borders and tapered tips—fully written for sizes S, M, and L, and very customizable in length or width. It’s a wonderful, relaxing way to continue the collection, creating a piece of literary-inspired luxury you’ll want to wear every day.

The Elinor Scarf is the fourth piece in the By a Lady collection, designed to be a soothing, rhythmic knit with a beautifully classic look. While the pattern is written for dk weight yarn on 4.5 mm needles, it’s very adaptable—you can use anything from fingering to chunky yarn to highlight your favorite fiber. Solid or light tonal colors really pop against the symmetric lines of the diamond lace, while darker or variegated yarns give the pattern a softer, subtler look. Gauge isn’t critical here, so you can relax and enjoy the process.

The scarf starts with a garter stitch tip before moving into the main pattern. From there, it’s a lovely mix of garter borders and a central diamond-shaped lace pattern that looks intricate but stays incredibly relaxing to knit without being overly fussy. When you’ve reached the desired length, a garter section shapes the other end for a balanced finish.

Offered in sizes S, M, and L, this scarf is incredibly flexible and beginner-friendly. Because the stitch repeat is straightforward (a multiple of 6 + 8), you can easily adjust both the width and length to create anything from a slim neckerchief to a giant wrap. It’s a fast project, and step-by-step video tutorials can help you along the way.

Customizable (my sample is size S and is about 4.5” wide at the widest part (main body) and about 44.25” long after blocking).

Based on my stitch gauge in this pattern, each consecutive size increases in width by approximately 2”. So, size M should be about 6.5” wide, and size L should be about 8.5” wide. I haven’t personally made these sizes, so the measurements may not be exact. Your individual tension & blocking could also influence the finished width.

Please note that the size instructions (S, M, L) are for width, not length. Make it any length you desire :)

Please note that there is no exact yardage required for this pattern. The reason is that, obviously, everyone likes a different scarf length, and I cannot accommodate all of that in the yardage. The same goes for the measurements; I have included the width of S, M, & L in the pattern as well as the length of my sample. Please check out my test knitters’ lovely project pages, where they show off the versatility of this pattern in all sorts of yarns and sizes! All sizes have been tested except the custom width.

This pattern is 7 pages long, but there are only 4 pages of actual knitting instructions. Look at the pattern photos to find a sample page of the pattern!
