The second chapter of our By a Lady series, the Emma Scarf, brings a fresh touch of classic romance to your needles with an engaging, accessible design. This piece highlights a striking star lace pattern that looks intricate but is delightfully simple to learn, making it a swift and rewarding project for knitters of all backgrounds. Anchored by clean garter-stitch ends and edges—complete with sizing from S through L, along with simple guidelines to customize the length and width to your liking—it is a beautiful continuation of the collection, offering a dash of period-inspired elegance that is pure joy to create and style.

The Emma Scarf is the second part of the By a Lady collection, designed to be an engaging yet relaxing knit. While the pattern is written for heavy DK/light worsted weight yarn on 4.5 mm needles, it’s completely adaptable—you can use anything from fingering to chunky yarn to highlight your favorite fiber. Solid or light tonal colors really show off the star lace details, while darker or variegated yarns give the texture a softer, subtler look. Always adjust your needle size to fit your yarn weight. Hitting gauge isn’t a huge deal, but here is mine for reference: 24 sts and 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Main Body Lace Repeat (stitches between the asterisks), measured over blocked center stitches (excluding selvedge stitches).

The scarf starts with a clean garter stitch tip before transitioning into the main pattern. From there, it’s a soothing mix of garter borders and star lace that adds just the right amount of period-inspired charm without being fussy. When you’ve reached your desired length, a matching garter section shapes the opposite end for a balanced, polished finish.

Offered in sizes S, M, and L, this scarf is incredibly flexible and beginner-friendly. Because the stitch repeat is so simple (a multiple of 4 plus 9), you can easily adjust both the width and length to create anything from a slim neckerchief to a dramatic, cozy wrap. It’s a swift project, and there are step-by-step video tutorials linked for several of the stitches, providing help for beginner knitters. The result is a timeless, romantic accessory that beautifully continues the collection in a piece that is pure joy to knit and style.

My sample is size S and is about 4” wide at the widest part (main body) and about 49.5” long after blocking. In this pattern, each consecutive size increases in width by approximately 1.5”. So, size M should be about 5.5” wide, and size L should be about 7” wide.

Please note that the size instructions (S, M, L) are for width, not length. Make it any length you desire :)

Please note that there is no exact yardage required for this pattern. The reason is that, obviously, everyone likes a different scarf length, and I cannot accommodate all of that in the yardage. The same goes for the measurements; I have included the width of S, M, & L in the pattern as well as the length of my sample.
