It has become a tradition of mine to publish a mystery mitten pattern in the month of October. And if you joined me for my previous October mysteries, then you already know that I love to entertain you not only with a mystery mitten design but with a spooky story as well.

The story I’d like to share with you this time happened once upon a time in an enchanted forest…

Look out for clues on
Wednesday, October 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th.

Where is the MKAL hosted: Join me in the I Make Mittens group for fun chat, inspiration and pattern support.

Since this is a mystery, I can’t give out too many details but here are a few things you will need to know.

  • We will be knitting a pair of stranded colorwork mittens with multiple colors. The charts suggest 8 different colors. You can, however, use fewer or more colors, and I invite you to use your imagination and think about the colors of an enchanted forest as it stands lit by the moonlight when you dive into your stash in search of possibilities.

Before I share more details, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my fantastic testers: Zwulli, bgow, AimeeRN, Envista and Juliemross. Thank you all so very much!

Materials
1. US Size 0 (2mm) set of dpns or circular needles (for Magic Loop method)
2. Fingering weight yarn 231y/50 g (211m/50g). You will need about 314y/70g total.
3. Tapestry needle (for duplicate stitch)
4. Beads (optional)

Notes
• Size: The size of the mittens can be adjusted with yarn and needles. My recommendation would be: for S/M light fingering + 2mm needles, for M use fingering + 2.25/2.5 mm needles, for large use sport weight and 2.5/3 mm needles.
• Stranded colorwork: Follow the charts from right to left. Catch longer floats using preferred method.
• Duplicate stitch: Some of the details are added by using duplicate stitch technique or embroidery.
• Adding beads (optional): The pattern will have suggestions on where to use beads.
• Construction: The mittens are knit in the round. The front of the mitten has more stitches than the palm side of the mitten (more notes on that in the instructions). The mittens have a sore thumb construction with the thumb gusset growing from the side of the mitten. Once the thumb gusset is finished, the thumb stitches are placed on a stitch holder or scrap yarn, and you finish the body of the mitten first. Lastly, the thumb stitches are placed back on needles and the thumb is completed.
