Enchanted Forest Mitts
If you like my Enchanted Forest Mittens but prefer fingerless gloves to full mittens, then you might like the Enchanted Forest Mitts. Just like the mittens, the design features the fabled slavic folklore character Baba Yaga and her little cabin on chicken feet.
Materials
1. US Size 0 (2mm) set of dpns or circular needles (for Magic Loop method)
2. Light fingering weight yarn 231y/50 g (211m/50g). You will need about 285y/62g total:
Color 1 - 55y/12g
Color 2 – 23y/5g
Color 3 – 23y/5g
Color 4 – 9y/2g
Color 5 – 46y/10g
Color 6 – 92y/20g
Color 7 – 37y/8g
Plus small amounts of red, gray and other colors for embroidery
3. Tapestry needle (for duplicate stitch)
Gauge
9 sts x 13 rows (in stranded colorwork knitting in the round) in 1” x 1” after blocking
Notes
• Sizes: The size of the mitts can be adjusted with yarn and needles. My recommendation would be: for S/M light fingering + 2mm needles, for M use fingering + 2.25/2.5 mm needles, for large use sport weight and 2.5/3 mm needles.
• Stranded colorwork: Follow the charts from right to left. Catch longer floats using preferred method. The mitts are knit with only two colors in a row. Details in other colors are added later.
• Charts: There are two sets of charts: use the first one to knit, then refer to the second set to add details in duplicate stitch or embroidery.
• Duplicate stitch: Some of the details are added by using duplicate stitch technique or embroidery.
• Construction: The mitts are knit in the round. The front of the mitt has more stitches than the palm side of the mitt (more notes on that in the instructions). The mitts have a sore thumb construction with the thumb gusset growing from the side of the mitten. Once the thumb gusset is finished, the thumb stitches are placed on a stitch holder or scrap yarn, and you finish the body of the mitt first. Lastly, the thumb stitches are placed back on the needles and the thumb is completed.
