Forlya is a knit hat with alternating medallion cables. It decreases in pattern, to give it a smoother finished look. Forlya means whirl in Cornish, which relates to the cable pattern.

This pattern is fully charted and written (English), and tally boxes are provided in the written pattern to keep track of rounds.

Skill level
This is a beginner-intermediate pattern, and is a good project for anyone who likes cables. It knits up surprisingly quick for a cabled item.

Techniques used
Knitting in the round on circular and/or double pointed needles, twisted loop cast on, knit, purl, k2tog, ssk, 6 stitch (3/3 LC and 3/3 RC) cables, and sl1, k2tog, psso.

Size
These are approximate, when stretched. Size will be smaller when laid flat. This hat is fitted and stretches to fit. It may benefit from blocking, especially for a slouchy fit. Size is determined by gauge - larger gauge will result in a larger hat.

Short Ribbing
• Adult (20-24” around, 9”-10” tall - 50-60cm around, 22.75-25.4cm tall)

Long Ribbing
• Adult (20-24” around, 10.5”-11.5” tall unfolded - 50-60cm around, 26.5-29.25cm tall unfolded)

Needles
Size 5 and size 8-10 US (3.75mm and 5mm-6mm, respectively), OR any size that gets the correct gauge and a size 2-4 sizes smaller, 16” (40cm) circular needles, 5 DPNs, and/or longer circular needles for magic loop.

Gauge
20 stitches and 26 rows in 4” (10cm) stockinette on larger needles for an adult small, 16 stitches and 22 rows in 4” (10cm) stockinette for an adult large.

Yarn - worsted weight 4, in a solid color or a subtle variegation, so as not to detract from the patterning. One or two solid colors is ideal.

Approximately 145-210 yards (132.5-192m), depending on gauge and ribbing length. Expect to use 30 yards (27.5m) for short ribbing and 60 yards (55m) for long ribbing.

I used Caron Simply Soft in Cobalt Blue (145 yards, 132.5m) for the one color sample with short ribbing on size 8 needles, and Caron Simply Soft in Robin’s Egg (47 yards, 43m) and Blueberry (135 yards, 123.5m) for the two color sample with long ribbing on size 10 needles.

Other supplies

  • Stitch marker for start of round
  • Optional extra 3 (or 7, for marking individual columns) contrasting stitch markers for pattern repeats
  • Cable needle
  • Yarn needle for finishing

Approx Stitch Count
6,056 for short ribbing, 7,096 for long ribbing, plus 102 if using two colors.

This pattern HAS been test knitted, with good results.
