I’ve always been admiring knitted shawls, but it’s not something I often wear myself. However I have a wonderful friend of - oh my… can’t believe it’s been so long… - twenty-five years who absolutely loves them. I made one for her last year and it was one of my most fun projects, not to mention made her quite happy. Ever since that I’ve been planning to design my own pattern but so far haven’t had any inspiration other than “a shawl”.
Now as I was rummaging through my stash, trying to designate different yarns with different projects I came upon this cute little yarn cake from a good while ago that turned out not suitable for what I bought it so it was just waiting for a different idea.
Its colours made me think of childhood, all the times we went for ice cream with my family, always having three scoops each, all the bright colours, grainy textures, simple pleasures. Childhood made me think of my friend, our school years, our shared laughs, her impeccable style, taste and elegance, the wonder of still having her in my life after all these years, even though we ended up living far from each other, eventually in different countries.
I kept looking at the yarn, imagining it with different stitches, trying to find something subtle, light and cheerful. Hope I succeeded.
