I love lace at a larger gauge. This scarf is intricate, beautiful, and delicate, but easy to knit. It’s reminiscent of antique lace, like my grandmother used to make. Designed as a respite for the neck, this scarf provides lacy layers without extra bulk and weight. With interesting construction details, like a Provisional Cast-On and a 3-Needle Bind-Off, this pattern is an experience in practicing techniques as well as relaxing into the lace repeats that run the length of the scarf. Knit in Abundant Earth Fibers Josef & Anni, lusciously soft and bouncy, this 3-ply yarn gives this scarf incredible stitch definition.

Finished Measurements: 71”/180cm circumference and 7.75”/19.7cm wide.

Yarn: Sport Weight. Approx. amount of yarn required: 565 yards/517 m.

Suggested Yarn: Abundant Earth Fiber, Josef & Anni, 90% US merino, 10% WA Targhee (360 yards /330m per 100g/3.5oz skein); 2 skeins of Cinnamon.

Suggested Needles: U.S. Size 5/3.75mm straight non-wooden needles (10”/25.4cm length) OR circular non-wooden needles (24”/61cm or longer), or size needed to get gauge. If using straight needles you’ll need two spares, one to place the provisional CO sts onto and one to do the knitting of the 3-needle BO. If using circulars you’ll need one spare needle, 12” circular or longer.

Notions: 15”/38cm piece of smooth waste yarn, crochet hook, 2 small stitch markers, tapestry needle, two bath towels, blocking mats (optional), blocking pins and blocking wires for opening up the lace (enough wires to make up approx. 160”/406cm of length, 80”/203cm for each side of scarf).

Gauge: (knit flat and measured after blocking) 20 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10.2 cm in Lace pattern. 21.5 sts and 34 rows over 4”/10.2 cm in stockinette.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate. Skills required: knit & purl, Provisional CO, decreasing, yarn overs, and 3-Needle Bind-Off.
