There’s something satisfying about a good winter hat: a relatively quick knit with plenty of room to play with colour and texture.

Hip to be Square combines a simple textured fabric with colourful geometric details for a cosy, playful hat that’s fun to knit and easy to wear.

The main colour is paired with five small amounts of contrasting fingering-weight yarn, making this a great project for using mini skeins and leftovers. Choose colours that make the squares pop, or keep things subtle for a more understated look.

The hat is worked in the round, with both written instructions and charts included. A pompom is completely optional — but certainly welcome!
