Whilst stuck at home in a dreary winter with a newborn baby I heard Pania Newton’s call ‘Come to Ihumātao, we need your help’ What was taking place were forced evictions of mana whenua from their own lands. It broke my heart but at the same time it warmed my heart to see Māori move en mass to Tamaki Makaurau to protect the whenua. It made me wonder ‘What can i do to tautoko?’ And Kotahitanga was my answer.

Kotahitanga is a potae with a tāniko feature calling for all the people of different maunga and awa to come together for the kaupapa.

Knit from the brim up in your favourite DK weight yarn, with basic stranded colourwork and sizes for the whole whānau, Kotahitanga will be a favourite .

All proceeds from purchases of Kotahitanga go to SOUL Save Our Unique Landscape to further help the protectors on the Ihumātao frontline. You can learn more about their cause here www.protectihumatao.com

The pattern includes both charted and written instructions.

Irihāpeti (4) wears a child sized, Tame (5 months) wears a baby sized and Renee wears adult. 3 skeins of Sumptuous were used across all these 3 sizes for both MC and CC
