Ojibwe legend tells of a village visited by plague in the dead of winter where many died, including the healer. To save the people, a young girl made a dangerous journey through snow to find medicine. Losing her moccasins, she left a trail of bloody footprints in the snow. She succeeded in bringing help and the village was saved. When the snow melted in spring where her footprints had been moccasin flowers grew—better known today by their western name of Lady’s Slipper orchid. (Although the details change, origin stories of the Lady’s Slipper orchid exist among many Native American tribes.)

This is a one size pattern with a bit of give. You can adjust size by using a lighter or heavier yarn. I would have one 50 g skein of the main yarn and small amounts of yarn for the orchid colorwork. You will also need 15 beads (6 size).

The pattern will take you step-by-step through how to create your 3-D orchid. If you need help, please reach out.

Happy knitting!
