Legato Scarf
Collection Info:
The Solo Skeins collection was created to make the most of the single skeins in your yarn stash, or those special skeins you want to make the most of. Each pattern is written for both fingering/sock and DK weight yarns, and uses less than 400 yards (fingering/sock) or 230 yards (DK).
Pattern Inspiration:
The Legato Scarf was named for the musical articulation “legato” which means “tied together” in Italian, indicating that the notes should be played smoothly connected. I thought the name was perfect for this long drapey scarf that has many ways to tie and style.
Basic Information:
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
Yarn: Fingering/sock (weight 1) or DK (weight 3). Approximately 400 (fingering) or 230 (DK) yards. I used Explorer Knits Denali Sock (80% SWM, 20% nylon) and Dyeing Wishes Shocking SW/N DK (75% SWM, 25% nylon) for my samples.
Hook: 3.75mm (fingering/sock) or 4.5mm (DK), or size needed to meet gauge.
Finished size, after blocking: 4” wide, 83” long (fingering) or 71” long (DK)
Gauge: Before blocking 24 (fingering)/16 (DK) sts = 4” wide. Measure the width of the first row of the center section to check your gauge. Stitch gauge is more critical for this pattern, as it determines the width of the scarf. See more details below.
Gauge is not critical for this design as long as you weigh your yarn as described in the pattern. Weighing your yarn carefully after the increase section will allow you to calculate the needed amount for decreases.
Yardage requirements for the border will vary dramatically based on the length of your scarf. If you are making your scarf significantly longer than my samples (details on page 6), I recommend leaving a few extra grams of margin for border yardage.
The scarf could technically be made with any weight of yarn, as both length and width are adjustable to your preference.
