The pattern for this hat is the same for the two sizes but uses two different needle sizes and weights of yarn for the two sizes - fingering (sock) weight for size S/M and sport weight for size M/L.

The chart has handy numbers indicating the number of stitches to be knit with one color before changing to the other color (saves a lot of time!).

Sizes: adult Small/Medium and adult Medium/Large

Yarn:

  • Size S/M, fingering weight (sock) yarn, approximately 132yards/120meters for main color and 88 yards/80 meters for contrast color
  • Size M/L, sport-weight yarn, approximately 120 yards/110mfor main color and 80 yards/73 meters for contrast color

Gauge:

  • Size S/M, 28 sts = 4 inches/10 cm
  • Size M/L, 25.5 sts = 4 inches/10 cm

Pattern for gauge is stranded stockinette stitch worked in the round.

Needles: Circular needles at least 32 inches long for magic loop. Adjust needle size to obtain gauge.

  • Size S/M US 1.5/2.5 mm
  • Size M/L US 2.5/3 mm

Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Skill Level: Intermediate - knitters need to be comfortable working stranded colorwork or fair-isle. Since there are areas where long floats are carried along the back of the stranded work, you need to be comfortable with catching floats. Links to videos with tips are included in the pattern.
