Maasaw is an oversized cowl… rich in texture with very simple mosaic colorwork. The pattern tells a story… the colors I chose in my sample represent me. The beauty that comes out in your design will represent you…cross cultural expression.

The path to Maasaw was quite organic, in and of itself. Maasaw came from you. In the days after I released Hadotso, I received many generous and thoughtful messages about how much they appreciated a project like Hadotso, but, that they just could not spend that kind of time knitting something so large, on fingering weight yarn. Background: Hadotso is an oversized, rectangularly shaped, shawl… rich in texture with very simple colorwork, knit in fingering weight yarn. Without question, it is a beast of a project!

I created Maasaw in the ‘spirit’ of Hadotso, for all of those who wanted a less intensive knitting experience yet achieves the same color blocking, textured effect. Maasaw is a brand new pattern, knitted in worsted weight yarn. It features 11 brand newly designed charts, with 2 additional bonus charts to utilize if you want to make a larger garment. I want to be clear: Maasaw is a completely and uniquely designed cowl. The charts that were created for Hadotso, do not appear in Maasaw.

Pattern Overview:

  • This cowl is constructed in one piece. Each chart is designed specifically to transition from one to another seamlessly.
  • Worked on straight or circular needles (your choice). It is NOT knit in the round. Provisional cast on, grafting
  • The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn.
  • Includes measurements {after blocking} for each individual section in case you alter the pattern.
  • Includes instructions if you want to make a shawl.
  • Mosaic knitting {Complete instructions for Mosaic Knitting are included}. Also included is an example chart, labeled in detail {anatomy of a mosaic knitting chart}.
  • 2 stitches are used: knit stitch, slip stitch
  • Simple Colorwork: knitting one color at a time
  • 11 charts are used in the knitting of the pattern sections. An additional two patterns are included in case you want to make the cowl longer! The ability to read charts OR the willingness to LEARN HOW to read charts is a must.
  • A schematic is included that describes how to read mosaic knitting charts.
  • As always, please read over the entire pattern before starting!

When you purchase Maasaw, you will receive three documents:

  1. Pattern Notes. This document includes the origin, overall pattern information, yarn, gauge, needles, notions, abbreviations, measurements, the basic rules of mosaic knitting (for this pattern), complete stitch guide with references, pattern info, resources and a statement about cultural appropriation.

  2. Finishing and Blocking Notes. This document includes the step by step instructions that include: dealing with the loose ends, washing Maasaw, blocking Maasaw and grafting Maasaw together.

  3. Maasaw Charts. This document includes all 11 (plus the two bonus charts) as well as: the rules for mosaic knitting, a generic mosaic knitting chart that is labeled in detail, including a worksheet to use alongside each of the charts (you can identify your colors there, make your own notes, I have written instructions for the first four rows of the chart as well as a ‘macro’ photograph of what the section looks like knitted).
