The “Monet” scarf is an ideal first project for an introduction to lace knitting. One straightforward pattern row is followed with three rows of garter stitch, creating a reversible scarf with a lovely scalloped design and a graceful drape.

The scarf requires just one skein of Rowan’s new ‘fine art’ premium hand painted sock yarn, made with merino wool, kid mohair, mulberry silk and polyamide. The variegated yarn is available in eight colorways. Pictured here is Shade 305 “Kingfisher.”

Finished size is approximately 8” wide by 60” in length. Gauge is not critical for this pattern. However, the length and width may vary depending on your personal tension and the type of yarn you use. Knit to desired length. The larger needle size (US 7, 4.50mm) allows for the lovely lace effect.

This is the stowaway project you can take on the plane or train to work on without having to refer to a chart or written directions. After working just a few times through the ‘feather and fan’ pattern row you will be well on your way to creating a beautiful and sophisticated scarf.
