Yarn – Two colors, about 100 yd (92 m) of each color. The recommended yarn is Malabrigo Rios, which is a worsted weight (weight 4) 100% superwash merino wool.
Gauge – Use a 4.0 mm or 4.5 mm hook or the size that gets you a gauge of (18.5 sts = 4”) and (20 rows in pattern = ~4.5” unstretched and can stretch comfortably to 6”). Go with row gauge over stitch gauge if you cannot hit both.
Fit – This pattern is for one size of beanie that should fit most adults. The finished beanie is 18” (~46 cm) around at the opening (unstretched). The length of the finished beanie is about 11” (~28 cm), and it should cover the top half of the ears when worn with a ~2.5” (~6.5 cm) cuff. Length is easy to adjust, so you can make yours longer or shorter as desired.
Construction – The beanie is worked so the rows run sideways (foundation chain determines the hat length, and the hat grows width-wise as you add rows) and the fabric is seamed with a single crochet seam and sewn shut at the top with whip stitch. The crown is tapered with short rows.
Errata (sort of) – Note that there is a visible seam on this pattern. I realized after I wrote and formatted everything that you can just use the very last row of the panel as the seam instead of doing an additional row just for the seam. However, I don’t feel like making a second one for photos and then re-writing the whole thing so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thank you to Angela for taking the flatlay photo!
