These socks are dedicated to my favorite children’s book of all time: The Neverending Story by German writer Michael Ende (first published in 1979, translated from German into 36 languages). The central theme of this fantasy novel is that imagination and belief are vital to human existence, and that stories have the power to transform both the world and the self. In my opinion, knitting has that same power.
These socks exist of little bricks; while knitting these repetitive stitches, your mind can create its own imaginative story. Or you could listen to the audio version of The Neverending Story or watch the movie. The border and leg pattern are divided by a lateral braid to give the socks a fantastical twist

Notes:

  • This pattern is for a patterned top-down sock, with a heel flap and gusset, knit using the magic loop method of knitting in the round.
  • The cuff and the leg pattern are divided by a lateral braid, giving these socks a very special look.
  • Pattern contains some helpful video links in both English (EN) and Dutch (NL).

Yarn:
- 100 grams (425 meters) of fingering weight sock yarn. The largest size will use up more yarn than the smaller sizes. 100 grams is enough yarn for knitting the socks in one in the largest size (size Large, European shoe size 49).

Sample used:
Regia Premium Cashmere, 51 Campanula. 100 grams (400 meters), 65% wool, 25% polyamid, 10% cashmere.

Needles:
2.25 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 80 or 100 cm circular needle

Notions:

  • crochet hook size 2.5 mm (to help closing the lateral braid gap)
  • 2 stitch markers (closed, matching your needle size)
  • opening coloured stitch markers / progress keepers when you want to keep track of your rounds
  • tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
  • wool wash for washing & blocking
  • sock blockers for blocking (optional)
  • sock ruler (optional)

Gauge:
32 sts x 48 rnds in stockinette stitch (knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm
