This newsboy cap is knit in one piece from the top down. You start with a circular cast on and then increase every other round for the body of the hat, followed by some short row shaping for the back band, and then finally cast off most of the stitches, leaving enough for the brim, which is knit in flat rows back and forth. A crescent of plastic goes inside the flap before it’s sewn closed to make the brim of the hat. This hat takes one skein of bulky yarn. Here I used Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky in Bollywood. You will also need 8 stitch markers and some plastic for the visor cut-out.

The pattern gives a hat that is about 19 inches around but very stretchy, so it fits a 21 inch head well. Because it is knit form the top down it is easily adjusted. Try it on as you go, and you can add more or less increase rounds to adjust the size accordingly. To make it slouchy, increase until it is about 2 inches larger than the head you’re fitting before you

The brim is a crescent of plastic that is sewn into a flap. For help with the finishing details or with the visor, you can check out the pattern support at twostitchknits.com/newsboy-cap.
