Ooh Floof! Hat
This lovely cosy beanie hat is inspired by the Ooh Floof! Mitts. The mitts were so snuggly and comfortable to wear that I couldn’t help thinking about how perfect they would be as a hat, with the chevron pattern repeating around it and culminating in a striking star on the crown.
The pattern is written for 2 adult sizes and would make a great gift knit.
This pattern is aimed at knitters with some experience of the techniques mentioned below, but could potentially be worked by a confident beginner with a basic knowledge of the techniques and access to good resources.
Construction
Worked in the round from the brim up to the crown, with a deep 2x2 ribbed brim (to cover the ears) and a striped colourwork pattern for the body and crown. The crown is worked with paired decreases on either side of the repeat sections. The soft and insulating fabric is produced with two yarns, a woollen fingering weight and a floofy lace weight. The fingering weight yarn is knitted singly for the main colour and both yarns are held together for the marled contrasting colour.
There are written instructions for the brim and charts for the colourwork body and crown.
Sizes
The pattern has two adult sizes with a recommended negative ease of up to 4.5cm (1.75”). But you could wear with more or less ease depending on your preference.
Small, to fit head circumference of 52.5-57cm (20.75-22.5”)
Large, to fit head circumference of 57-61cm (22.5-24”)
Yarn
50g Fingering weight yarn will be plenty for either size. Combined with 20g heavy Lace weight fluffy yarn (floof), such as Baby Suri Alpaca.
The small hat shown, used 42g West Yorkshire Spinners, Signature 4 Ply and 16g Fyberspates, Cumulus, heavy lace 3 Ply.
Needles
2.5mm (US1.5) (or size needed to obtain gauge)
If using circular needles use a length suitable for working the hat circumference given and for working the decreasing circumference of the crown, alternatively use double-pointed needles.
Notions
6 stitch markers, tapestry needle.
This pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
