Party Garty : A design-your-own striped asymmetrical triangle-shaped shawl knit from the top down, using garter stitch as the backdrop for super fun stripes and color blending with 2 bind off options.
This pattern is written as more of a formula for you to be your ultimate creative self! I have mapped out exactly where I changed colors for each size, which yarn I used, and how large I made my shawls in case you want to make something similar to mine. Otherwise, think of this pattern as your blank canvas! Stripe Sequences for both shawls are included, as well as a Coloring Page to help you plan out your colors. Use up leftover yarns in your stash, full skeins of fingering weight, or even your coveted mini skeins! This pattern is the perfect backdrop for all the Advents, Countdown Boxes and mini skeins you have on the shelves!
Yarn Notes:
For the Small sample, I used 12 mini skeins from The Little Mermaid 2025 Countdown Box by Fangirl Fibers. This is a fantastic pattern to use any of your mini skeins and leftovers, but please note that the longer the shawl gets, the more of each mini skein will be used, and the fewer rows will be worked for each mini. Yarn is listed in approximate grams for the Large size because I used a mixture of different fingering weight bases from multiple dyers. Please note that your gauge may vary from stripe to stripe if you decide to mix yarns. Aim for a fabric that is drapey but not too open.
Skill level:
Beginner shawl friendly!! This is a great pattern to keep your hands busy, for gifting to loved ones, or if you just want some mindless garter stitch where you don’t really have to count your stitches.
Techniques used:
knit, yarn overs, top-down asymmetrical triangle shawl shaping, Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, Applied Lace Bind Off (optional).
Construction Notes:
I love a good stashbuster!! My studio consists of endless bins of yarn, both in skein form and leftover cakes and balls. This shawl was created as a prototype at first, a jumping-off point for another pattern of mine, so that I could experiment with shawl shaping. Then it kept growing and became one of my favorite shawls! I love it so much I knit a second sample using minis from a lovely countdown box with some color blending. I have always wanted to create a lacey applied border using mini skeins, so there is that option for you as well! Feel free to add it, or simple bind off. It’s completely up to you.
How this shape is constructed: The asymmetrical triangle shawl shaping is created by increasing 1 stitch at the right edge, 2 stitches at the “spine” and 2 stitches at the left edge. I say “spine” because as your shawl grows, the point at which you will add the increases there will slowly become closer to the right edge (as you’re knitting). There are 2 bind off options: either a simple stretchy bind off, or a lace applied border.
This shawl is so fun to knit and wear, and will elevate any outfit. I love wearing this shape kerchief-style, wrapped around my neck with the bottom of the triangle pointing downwards.
