Description
When I was a little girl, I had a small picture card with roses on it that I absolutely loved. I don’t remember where it came from or what happened to it, but I remember perfectly the happiness it brought me. I could spend long stretches of time simply looking at it and admiring its colors.

They say that in order to create, we have to hold on to something of a child’s way of seeing the world—that ability to be amazed by the simplest things. Perhaps that is why that image stayed with me for so many years.

When I finished this shawl, I immediately thought of those roses. Not because they look the same, but because they awakened in me that same feeling of joy and wonder.

Maybe that is why this piece feels so special to me. Every time I look at it, I remember the little girl I once was and the happiness she found in something as simple as a picture of roses.

This is an easy-to-make mini square scarf done in Stockinette stitch with textured stitch borders. The embroidery is done by Swiss Darning (Duplicate Stitch) and is charted. Since the embroidery uses small bits of yarn, you can use leftover yarn for embroidery.
