Royal Crown
Are you looking to create handmade keepsakes for your friends, family or customers? These Royal Crochet Crowns are the ideal, reusable accessory for royal role play, cosplay and fancy dress for all ages.
Far more comfortable and long-lasting than the usual shop-bought crown accessory, these crocheted crowns are also quick to make and so much fun to wear!
This ‘Royal Crochet Crown’ pattern is most suitable for intermediate crocheters, with design variations to make it more accessible to an experienced beginner and pro tips to challenge a more advanced crocheter. The pattern includes detailed and comprehensive pattern notes including a size guide, stitch guidance, tips and advice to help you, along with plenty of photographs to demonstrate the more detailed parts.
This pattern gives instructions for how to make three sizes of crown: infant (approx 6 months - 3 years), child (3-10 years) and teen/adult (10 years +). There is also guidance for creating a ‘made-to-measure’ crown and for how to create miniature versions for dolls/teddies.
I recommend using a 6mm/J crochet hook and chunky/bulky (category 5) yarn but this pattern also works well with Aran yarn or DK yarn held double/triple, depending on the size of crown you choose to make. As each crown only uses a small amount of yarn, they are a great project to use up partial skeins.
You have the creative freedom to choose your own colours and fibres and customise the crowns to your liking, making them as detailed or as plain as you’d like. The final page of the pattern contains several photographs of different crocheted crowns to inspire you.
The pattern is written in English, using US crochet terms but includes a conversion chart to UK terms, along with abbreviation reminders on each page. It has been very thoroughly tested by a global team of crocheters, of varying levels of experience. You can view their wonderful work on my Instagram page in the ‘Royal Crowns’ highlight.
There are several different crochet stitches required in this pattern. While instructions are provided for some of them, it is expected that you will already know how to create the others. The following information gives more detail:
You will need to know (or be able to learn) how to: slipknot, chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, treble crochet, create front loop only stitches, crab stitches (reverse single crochet) and work in the round. If you need support with this, there are stitch tutorials for most of these skills in my Instagram ‘Tutorials’ highlight @hook.and.happy or you can find a wealth of in-depth tutorial videos on You Tube.
This pattern gives instructions for how to: join each round, create bobble stitches and puff stitches, change yarn colour, increase the stitch count where needed, finish with an invisible join, crochet complete crowns in 3 different sizes and adapt the pattern so it is made-to-measure or a miniature version, if preferred.
’Pro tips’ include: how to start with a neat edge and how to tighten a treble crochet stitch for a consistent look.
Here are some comments from my pattern testers:
“Thanks for allowing me to test your pattern, it was great fun. I love how detailed it was, lots of info. As a designer and pattern editor I can see how much work you’ve put in and I think it’s fab.”
“Your presentation style is fabulous. The pattern is very well written and easy to follow.”
“I love your clear patterns and the photos are extremely helpful. I like the use of bold lettering and notes in the blue margin.”
“I already wanna make another. I’m definitely making similar to this but with purple gems for my husband. Works up so fast too. I love it!”
