Sapporo winters are cold and snowy, so reliable headwear is a must-have. This cozy hood is easy to wear and keeps the head, ears and neck warm and comfortable in freezing conditions. The fit can be adjusted with a drawstring. Made with aran yarn, this is quite a fast knit, and there’s no seaming or grafting.

The hood starts with a provisional cast-on around the face and is knitted seamlessly top down, ending with neck ribbing.

Techniques you should be familiar with
• provisional cast-on
• knit and purl stitches
• decreasing: k2tog, ssk
• picking up stitches
• stretchy bind-off
• i-cord

Yarn
200-210 m (218-230 yd) of aran weight yarn.
The sample shown was knit with 144 g/5 oz (201 m/220 yd) of Filatura di Crosa Primo (100% superwash merino; 70 m/76.5 yd per 50 g/1.75 oz).

Gauge
16 sts x 21 rounds per 10 cm (4”) in stockinette st with 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.

Needles
40 cm (16”) circular needles size 4.5 mm (US 7) for the head and 40 cm (16”) circular needles size 4 mm (US 6) for the neck ribbing.

Additional materials
Waste yarn, crochet hook and spare needles for provisional cast-on. Stitch markers, stitch holder, tapestry needle. Safety pin.

Finished size
One size fits most (head circumference 20.5-24.5”/52-62 cm). The fit is not constricting but the drawstring is there to tighten and make it snug.
