Scale Mail Pangolin
The pangolin, also known as a scaly anteater, is a perfect candidate for scale mail knitting due to its unique appearance! But also because of this they are unfortunately highly trafficked with eight species of pangolin whose conservation status is listed as threatened.
This pattern was designed with a hope to boost awareness and support of pangolins, so for every copy of this pattern sold I will donate €1 to a charity that works towards the conservation of pangolins!
See donation terms at the pattern website
The body of the pangolin is worked in the round from tail to nose tip, followed by the four legs separately knit in the round and sewn on. The examples were made with James C Brett Marble Chunky in MC09 (Pebbles) and MC59 (Iron Ore) for the light brown and dark brown respectively.
Some scales are added to the i-cord section that constitutes the tail, which is somewhat fiddly. Due to the pointy noise of the pangolin, it is difficult to add safety eyes, so advice on how best to do so and alternative suggestions are included.
This pattern requires 74 small scales and 42 large scales;
Small scales are 9/16” x 7/8” (14.3mm x 22.2mm) with a 0.22” (5.6mm) hole
Large scales are 7/8” x 1.4” (22.2mm x 25.8mm) with a 0.35” (8.9mm) hole
The examples are all made with bronze scales from theringlord.com.
Scales are added right into the fabric of the gloves with modified purl stitches, and the large scales are also reinforced with a second modified purl stitch (with a video tutorial as well as step-by-step photos for each technique).
