Beginner Knitted Scale Mail Gloves
As a big thank you to everyone who ever bought (or buys) this pattern, you will get a €4 discount off the new larger ultimate scale mail gloves pattern to offset the price you paid on this one. If you bought it before the pattern cost €4 you get discounted a little more than you paid!
If you decide after buying that you are ready for the more advanced version, the discount ensures you don’t lose out for starting with the beginner level!
(where relevant any taxes paid should also balance out)
Major update for 2026 with new pictures, improved charts, and more guidance for absolute beginners! The pattern has also been rewritten to improve readability and tweak sizing.
Now links to new video tutorial as well as step-by-step photos for the knit scale technique.
The pattern and chart pages are photo-free and can be printed in black and white. In all my patterns I use minimal colour coding, and always include other tells (usually shapes or symbols) so that colour is not vital to the pattern, to make it colour-blind friendly and easy to follow in black and white.
Significant changes from the original pattern:
Regular gloves still require 300 scales, however long gloves require 450. Advice is included on making other lengths, so it is still possible to make a glove with 400 scales if desired.
Legacy notes included for completion:
A simple pattern for scale mail gloves, worked entirely in knit stitches and slightly modified knit stitches (photo tutorial for the technique included) to knit the scales right into the fabric of the gloves.
The pattern additionally includes a blank grid with instructions for if you wish to knit more than one colour of scale into your gloves in a specific pattern. This chart is not needed if you are only using one colour of scale.
The pattern includes two lengths, and four sizes of gloves;
6 1/2 or 9 inches long from base of the fingers down the arm (approximate)
Small, Medium, Large and X Large hand sizes fitting from 6 1/2 to 9 inches measured around the hand at the base of the fingers.
Required
300 (for 6 1/2 inch) or 400 (for 9 inch) scales
2026 update - 450 required for 9 inch
any small scale from TheRingLord.com is suitable (any approx 9/16” by 7/8”leaf shaped scale with 5mm hole should also do)
large scales will not work for this pattern
Yarn - 100g of aran, worsted, or the narrower chunky yarns work well with the scales (adjust the needle size to achieve gauge)
The given gauge is on a plain piece of garter stitch, without any scales
