Sea Sway was the result of my desire to knit a massive asymmetrical shawl that was completely reversible but didn’t include garter stitch as a main component. Since I had requests for a written pattern, I decided to write one that is completely customizable and can be knit with any weight yarn, needle size, or gauge.

I tend to see patterns not as rule of law but rather as “recipes” that are meant to be altered, so this is a “choose your own adventure” type of knit. The shawl design is inherently flexible and open to many interpretations; it allows for the freedom to ‘just knit’ and is a perfect project to work on while traveling, watching TV, or simply zoning out at the end of a stressful day.

Please note that the design doesn’t explicitly state to work x number of rows for each stitch panel. Rather, it includes detailed instructions on each stitch pattern but leaves the rest to each individual knitter (which is a large part of the reason why this is free).

The sample was made with 920 yards of sport weight yarn (Cascade Venezia Sport, 70% wool 30% silk) on US 7 / 4.5mm needles. The gauge in the sample shawl is 18 stitches and 20 rows in moss stitch and 16 stitches and 18 rows in the lace, after blocking.

For the sake of transparency, I want to point out that I accidentally hit the rating button onto my own pattern while scrolling on my phone, and it’s evidently impossible to delete a pattern rating at this time. This topic is currently being tracked in Issue 1749. The rating will be removed after the issue is fixed.
