Soft Current is a lightweight lace loop with a flowing rhythm and an easy, wearable shape. Simple lace and easy cables move across a long rectangle, knit flat and finished with a small seam at one corner. That tiny join is what gives it structure, turning the piece into a loop that stays in place and takes all the guesswork out of styling.

Two fingering-weight skeins is all it takes to create something soft, beautiful, and easy to throw on and go. Watch our video to see how it fits.

Design Details

The lace and cable motifs are easy to follow, and the pattern includes both written and charted instructions so you can choose what’s most comfortable. A short video tutorial walks through the special stitches and offers styling tips.

The stitch count stays consistent throughout, so once you settle into the pattern you can simply keep knitting while the texture builds naturally across the fabric.

Pattern Highlights

  • Only two skeins of fingering weight yarn
  • Repetitive stitch pattern that becomes easy to memorize
  • Styling built into the construction
  • Written and charted instructions included

Construction Overview

Just like Mossblossom, Soft Current is knit flat as a rectangle. After blocking, a short 2–4” seam at one corner creates a soft loop that slips easily over the head and stays in place.

The small seam gives the piece its structure and removes the guesswork from styling. Watch the video to see the shape and how it’s knit.

Yarn Notes

We knit our sample in Floating from A Verb for Keeping Warm (70% superfine alpaca, 20% silk, 10% cashmere), a fingering weight yarn with beautiful drape and airy softness that suits the lace and cables especially well.

The colorway Kombu, a deep layered green with cool undertones, highlights the texture without overpowering it. Semi solids and tonals work particularly nicely for this project and let the stitch pattern remain the focus.

Soft Current is also a perfect home for those two special skeins you’ve been saving.

Needles & Gauge

US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 20–40”

Repeat section of lace chart sts 4–45 = 6.5” (16.5 cm) wide
30 rows in pattern = 4” (10 cm) deep

We like the drape achieved on US 5 needles.

Yardage Requirements

800 yds / 730 m fingering weight yarn

Finished Measurements (Blocked)

Depth: 18” / 46 cm
Width: 50” / 127 cm (25” / 63.5 cm folded in half)

Size is easily modified by working more or fewer chart repeats (yardage will change).
