Spice Mittens is a pair of very warm, yet breathable mittens with a beautiful geometric fair isle pattern overlaid over blocks of color. They have extra-long cuffs to keep out the cold. Wool in a sport weight yarn is best for these mittens since wool continues to insulate even when wet.

The fair isle stranded makes them double thickness giving them the nice warmth you will be looking for on a winter day. I wear mine day in day out through a Vermont Winter. That is, when my kids don’t steal them from me.

The pattern has instructions for two different sizes, depending on how large your hands are around. Measure around your hands at the knuckles to determine which size to use.
S/M - hand circumference at knuckles: 18.5cm / 7¼in. This size works well for a child’s or small woman’s hands.
L - hand circumference at knuckles: 20.5cm / 8in. This size works well for a large woman’s or medium men’s hands.
To adjust for length of your fingers you can add in extra pattern repeats or take them out. The pattern discusses this in detail to help you figure it out.

For a matching hat, check out my Spice Hat pattern. There are many options for creative color choices. So far I have made my Spice Mittens or Spice Hats in colors reminiscent of a spicy curry (red, orange, yellow), an herb bouquet (greens), an assortment of chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg (browns) and a not so spicy mix of blues.
