I’ve been watching a lot of Outlander lately. And I mean hours every evening--and not because I love the plot. What I do love is the amazing knit and crochet apparel featured in the show (and the costuming in general). There’s a scene in Season 4 where Jamie, one of the main protagonists and a tall drink of Scottish whisky himself, is sitting at the table knitting socks. ~swoon~ This led me to seek out the PERFECT oversized, squishy cowl à la Claire. Something that would keep me warm while I walked wistfully through a forest, hoping that my own Jamie Fraser would appear, shirtless, to whisk me away to a time when women were mere objects and antibiotics were a far-flung hope…wait…never mind.

Needles: US size 15/10mm circular needles (use a ~12 cord or use magic circle method with longer cord as needed) or US size 15/10mm straight needles that are at least 14” in length.

Yarn used: 2 skeins of DK weight yarn (you will hold them double) ~250-300 yards each. I used 2 skeins of Kim Dyes Yarn Brioche DK in Salem.

Gauge: 13 stiches and 10 rows per 4”/10cm worked in pattern

Other notions: Darning/tapestry needle

Final measurement: Piece should be ~10” wide and ~48” long.

Pattern notes: You will work this piece flat, which means that even if you are using circular needles, you’ll turn piece over at the end of each row as if you were using straight needles. This pattern uses the Chinese Wave stitch. You can make this into a scarf by not seeming the ends together at the end, and you can make the cowl shorter if you want to use less yarn (note that you probably won’t be able to double it up around your neck if you go this route).
