This pattern is worked from the top, with the increases forming a six-legged ‘starfish’, and then petering out to soft-shaped petals further down the hat.

It is available in two sizes, catering for babies up to 1 year old.

The yarn I used is slightly thicker than DK. The gauge given above is for Rowan Classic Yarns 50% merino 50% silk (now discontinued); additional gauge for Hotwool by Miss Tricot Filati (an elusive Italian-made mix of 45% wool and 55% acrylic microfibre) is 19 sts and 24 rows in 10 cm on 4 mm needles in stockinette.

The pattern is suitable for a fairly inexperienced knitter, and includes an easy-to-follow chart.
