STEMPEL beanie
Bottom up beanies have always had one drawback for me - I could never knit the brim height just right. It would turn out too short, too long… and after trying the finished piece, I often felt a tiny hint of disappointment. With the STEMPEL beanie, I have set myself one task only: to design a construction that would offer as many possibilities for modifications as possible! So you can knit the beanie you will truly love.
STEMPEL beanie is knitted from the bottom up using the Half Fisherman’s Rib stitch, with the wrong side of the stitch being the right side of the beanie. After casting on using the Provisional Cast On without a crochet hook (there is a video tutorial for it included!) method, the base is worked first, followed by the crown. At the very end, in the opposite direction and on the wrong side, the brim is knitted. Thanks to this construction, not only can the height of the brim be easily adjusted, but also the sts are facing the same direction on every part of the beanie.
Small details, but they really make a difference.
You can download a PDF preview with the most important information such as size guide, detailed measurements, yarn requirement, needles and notions in ENG and PL here.
Sizes:
STEMPEL beanie was designed with a 1 - 6 cm 0.5 - 1.5 in negative ease. This means that the circumference of the finished hat - without stretching - will be 1 - 6 cm / 0.5 - 1.5 in / smaller than your head circumference.
There are three sizes to choose from. Sizes 1 (2) 3 will fit the following head circumferences: 48-52 (53-57) 58-63 cm /18.75-20.5 (2.75-22.5) 22.75-24.75 in /.
The STEMPEL beanie was designed to be approximately 2 cm / 0.7 in / taller than the height of the head for a given size. If you prefer a different height, you can easily modify this measurement - just follow the instructions in the pattern.
The black STEMPEL beanie from the pictures has the modified height, and the burgundy and grey one are 2 cm / 0.75 in / higher than my head circumference - as designed.
Suggested yarn:
The STEMPEL beanie offers endless possibilities for choosing and combining yarns.
It can be knitted with three strands - two of fingering weight yarn and one strand of lace weight yarn or with two strands - one strand of DK weight yarn and one Lace weight or one Aran/Chunky
weight.
Tested yarns or yarns combination and requirements:
Three strands: 100 (150) 150 g - Sunday from Sandnes Garn (or MY TIME MERINO from GABO wool) held together with 25 (25-50) 25-50 g - Tynn Silk Mohair from Sandnes Garn (or MOHSILKO from GABO wool)
Two strands: 100 (150) 150-200 g - Pura Lana from Gepard Garn held together with 25 (25-50) 25-50 g - Kid Seta from Gepard Garn
One strand: 150 (150-200) 200g - Nepal from DROPS
Swatch and gauge:
When it comes to beanies, matching the gauge to the given one is really crucial to achieving the desired garment. Do not skip this step - even if you truly hate swatching!
Gauge, measured from the swatch knitted in rounds using the pattern stitch, on 3,5 mm / US 4 / or 4 mm / US 6 / needles, after washing and blocking:
10 x 10 cm / 4x4 in / = 14 sts x 40 (worked) rnds
Remember, that in Half Fisherman’s Rib stitch, where the wrong side of the stitch is the right side of the hat, the knit stitches are visible in the columns of knit stitches every other round. The smaller knit stitches are hidden but when measuring the gauge we take into account all the rounds actually worked.
Techniques:
- Provisional Cast On without a crochet hook (video tutorial included in the pattern)
- Half Fisherman’s Rib with yarn overs, knitted on WS and RS (video tutorials included in the pattern)
- Italian Bind Off
- Decreasing methods: brRdec, brLdec (video tutorials included in the pattern), k2tog, k3tog, ssk
All techniques used in the pattern are described there in detail and most have video tutorials available if needed.
