Tanglewood Mittens are our yearly gifting season pair, a cozy project with a twisting cable motif and little bobbles winding across the back of the hand. Thoughtful shaping and a stretchy folded cuff keep the fit comfortable, while the balanced motif gives them that classic handknit look you reach for all winter.
Knit in plump DK weight yarn, the cables are engaging and easy to knit. We’ve also included a video tutorial for knitting cables without a cable needle so you can settle in and enjoy the process.
Design Details
The cable panel flows organically across the hand while the palm stays smooth for comfort. Bobbles add texture without interrupting the movement of the motif, and the folded cuff gives the mitten structure and warmth at the wrist.
The shaping is built in as you knit, so the mitten follows the natural curve of the hand and sits comfortably without bulk.
Pattern Highlights
- Classic cable motif with added texture from bobbles
- Folded cuff warm and comfortable at the wrist
- DK weight yarn cozy and quick to knit
- Video tutorial included for cable knitting without a cable needle
Construction Overview
Tanglewood Mittens are worked in the round from the cuff upward. You begin with a ribbed cuff, then increase for the thumb along the palm while the cable motif travels up the back of the hand.
Thumb stitches are placed on waste yarn while the hand continues to the fingertips with charted decreases shaping the top. The mitten is closed with Kitchener stitch. The thumb is then picked up and worked in the round, and the cuff is folded after blocking for a finished fit.
Yarn Notes
We knit our sample in 29 Bridges Merino DK, a round, springy yarn that shows cables clearly and keeps the fabric warm.
Fiber: 100% superwash merino
Yardage: 230 yd / 100 g
A smooth DK yarn with good stitch definition works best here and helps the cables and bobbles stand out.
