The Iron Giant is my boyfriend’s favorite animated movie of all time, and after he introduced me to it, I completely understood why! Despite being created for destruction, the Iron Giant chooses to be a gentle friend who deeply cares for those around him.

The story inspired me so much that, for my boyfriend’s birthday, I decided to make him his very own Iron Giant. Years later, I’m thrilled to share this new and improved pattern with you! This design comes from a truly special place in my heart, and I hope you enjoy making it as much as I enjoyed designing it.

This crochet pattern is fan art inspired by The Iron Giant. It is not an officially licensed product, and I am not affiliated with or endorsed by Warner Bros., Brad Bird, or any rights holders of The Iron Giant.

Abbreviations and Terms (US Crochet Terms)

• MR (Magic Ring) - aka Magic Circle, this is a starting loop for circular shapes
• Slip knot - type of starting loop where you make a knot with an open loop
• ch (chain)
• ch1 turn - make 1 chain and turn your work
• slst (slip stitch)
• sc (single crochet)
• inc (increase stitch) - 2sc in the same stitch
• dec (decrease stitch) - combine 2 stitches into 1 stitch
• hdc (half double crochet)
• hdc inc (half double crochet increase) - 2hdc in the same stitch
• dc (double crochet)
• dc inc (double crochet increase) - 2dc in the same stitch
• dc dec (double crochet decrease) - combine 2 dc stitches into 1 stitch
• FLO (front loop only) - work the round/following stitches into the front loops only
  • Entire round in FLO → Rnumber FLO:
  • Specific stitches in FLO → FLOstitch
• BLO (back loop only) - work the round/following stitches into the back loops only
  • Entire round in BLO → Rnumber BLO:
  • Specific stitches in BLO → BLOstitch
• Join yarn - attach yarn to the indicated stitch using a chain

Materials

• Medium (Gauge 4) yarn in 3 colors:
  • Light grey - This is the main colour so please get an abundance, I used nearly an entire 7oz skein, get at least 2 skeins of this color
  • Middle grey
  • Dark grey
• 3.5 mm crochet hook
• White felt fabric
• Stuffing/Polyfill
• Stitch markers
• Sewing pins
• Scissors
• Large eye sewing needles
• 3mm craft wire
  • This is for providing support in the hip area when we get to assembling, you may use other support items such as a few pipe cleaners twisted together, depending on how small or big your project ends up being
• Standard pliers
• Glue/Adhesive (i.e fabric glue, hot glue, etc)
  • I used a glue gun with hot glue sticks

Final measurement for the finished robot will be ~21.5 in (54.4cm) tall laying down, and ~11 in (28cm) tall sitting down.

Feel free to use any yarn and hook size you like, just keep in mind your project size will vary depending on yarn and hook sizes!
