These are children’s mittens (approx. 8-10 years) knitted two-stranded in the round, in accordance with the Norwegian Selbu tradition. The cuff is made in a lacy pattern, the thumb is gusseted, and the tip tapered. The mittens are made using dpns and with placing thumb stitches on hold. The pattern is both written and charted, and all special techniques are explained.

Gauge:
36 sts and 36 rows per 10 cm/4”

NOTE that the needle size is smaller, and gauge stitch count higher, than suggested for yarn.

Materials:

  • Yarn: approx. 30 gr MC + 30 gr CC total. Used in example is Finull by Rauma Garn, a 2-ply wool yarn with 175 metres per 50 grams. Note that suggested gauge for yarn does not match pattern’s gauge. This is to achieve a denser fabric for the mittens.
  • Dpns size 2.0 mm or size needed to achieve gauge
  • A piece of scrap yarn or stitch holder for thumb stitches
  • Darning needle

Meaurements:
Hand length excl cuff: 16 cm/6.3”
Circumference hand: 18.5 cm/7.3”

The pattern is in English and Norwegain, and it also contains a separate PDF with all charts right side up, for use with digital trackers.
