This pattern is for all you yarn impulse buyers out there who have a gorgeous single skein of fingering weight yarn waiting to be used! The Tournesol Shawlette is a one-skein wonder brought about by a lovely hank of Tosh Merino Light in Daffodil. The gorgeous earthy golden color of the yarn inspired me to create a sunflower-themed shawlette featuring cabled petals and little eyelet “seeds”.

Here are some of my favorite things about this shawlette pattern:

  • It combines the fun of cables with the simple, meditative nature of garter stitch.
  • It’s worked sideways, which means it is very easy to customize both length and depth. (Plus, the cast on and bind off are both one stitch!).
  • It looks absolutely lovely in solid colors, but also works well with variegated yarns as long as they aren’t too crazy. You could even try working a contrasting color for the edge (see the projects for an example), or do a fun and wacky stash buster by changing colors every repeat.

The cable panel is both written and charted for this pattern.

Dimensions: As written, this pattern uses up one standard skein/hank of fingering or sock weight yarn to create a shawl about 55”/140 cm long and 16”/41 cm deep.

Level: Intermediate. This pattern uses one simple cable that is sometimes worked at the end of the row. It also uses yarn overs, k2tog, kfb, pfb, and ptbl.
