Trawler Hat
This hat is a combination of an intuitive and dense geometric pattern of twisted stitches for texture and interest and the warmth of a squishy fisherman’s rib brim, making for toasty warmth in the cold weather.
The result is an engaging knit and a hat of cosy goodness, which is both lovely to look at and great to wear.
After working a snuggly Fisherman’s Rib brim, knit up in either 1 or 2 colours, you’ll work continuously to the crown decreases in the diamond patterned chart made up of alternating Right and Left leaning twists. Due to the nature of these stitches, it is a fairly tight-fitting but is open to various size adjustments. You can add more ‘slouch’ amount by working extra repeats of the chart pattern before proceeding to crown decreases, and in circumference by adjusting the cast on amount, as explained within the Finished measurements section.

Knitting skills & techniques used:
Advanced Intermediate: Whilst knitting in the round, you will be working Fisherman’s rib for the brim and Right and Left leaning twists (RT & LT) to form the main pattern over 16 stitch repeats. Crown decreases are performed using K2togethers and SSK’s during small circumference knitting.

Materials:
The following yarn usage amount is an approximate guide and is in fact a little over the actual amount I used, as I have applied an approx. 10% buffer of each yarn used, in view of differences between knitter’s gauge and such, and to give you a few grams room:
Requires approx. 285 yards / 260 metres DK weight yarn. (This is the combined amount of both yarns required to make the 2-colour version but is also what you would need if making the 1 colour version. For the 1 colour version sample I used Hook & Cwtch DK Superwash Merino, 100g, 246 yards / 225 meters, 75% Superwash Merino Wool & 25% nylon, in the colourway River Confetti - (heavy speckle in neutral shades))
For the 2 colour Sample I used: West Yorkshire Spinners Jacob DK, 100g, 246 yards / 225 meters, 100% Wool - Jacob, in the following colourways:
Yarn MC: Light Grey, (grey) (amount used 244 yards / 223 meters)
Yarn CC: Brown Black, (dark brown) (just a small amount, 10-15g should be fine approx.41 yards / 37 metres) but any wool-based DK Weight yarn of choice should work fine.
Needles:
Brim 3.75mm / US 5 Circular needle (40cm), Main part 4mm / US 6 Circular needle (40cm)
& DPN’s / longer corded needles for magic loop method for small circumference knitting during crown decreases.
Notions:
6 stitch markers (optional) & 1 unique BOR marker. Tapestry needle/crochet hook to weave ends.

Gauge: 4” (10 cm) on 4 mm / US 6 needles (after blocking).
Using Chart on Page 5, Rounds 1-47:
28 sts (which equates to 1.75x 16 st reps of chart)
& 42 rounds (which equates to approx. 7 rounds short of 1 whole repeat of the chart).
I suggest casting on at least 2 of the 16 stitch repeat rounds and working through rounds 1 - 47 twice - to have both enough to measure and start from the beginning of a repeat comfortably.
Incorrect Gauge can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
