Trawler Shawl
This shawl is full of traditional elements and cosy goodness, making for an engaging and developing knit. It is constructed as an asymmetrical triangle. It heavily features twisted stitches and cables to add interest and texture to the knitting process, interspersed with seed stitch and garter bands to give small frequent “restful” stitches to provide ease between them.
The result is an engaging knit and a shawl full of traditional elements and cosy goodness, which is both lovely to look at and easy & comfortable to wear.
I used two colours but to suit your choices of yarn options you can use one or as many colours for the different sections as you wish. Off
More details regarding the rate of increase and construction are laid out in the Notes
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Advanced Intermediate: Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling. Increases by of Knit Front Back (KFB). Cables worked held both at back and front to form the pattern are worked as well as Right and Left leaning twists. These regularly worked rope style cables, are worked over eight stitches, which is a repeated theme in which to work most of the stitch patterns, sticking to the multiples of eight.
Materials: Requires approx 989 metres / 1,082 yards DK weight yarn.
The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide and includes the approximate yardage amounts I used of each colour.
The yardage amounts shown are a little over what was actually used in view of rounding up to give you several grams room regarding what’s required for each of the 2 yarns:
Whilst any DK weight yarn with good drape and stitch definition will work fine, for the sample I used Eden Cottage Yarns, ‘Keswick DK’, 85% Superwash Merino, 15% Donegal Nep, 100g, 212 meters (232 yards)
Yarn A: Scorched Moors, (Darker Shade) (amount used 488 meters / 534 yards)
Yarn B: Barn Door, (Lighter Shade) (amount used 501 metres / 548 yards)
Needles: 5mm / US 8 (100cm – 150cm cord length minimum)
Notions: Cable needle / DPN, 25 stitch markers, tapestry needle / crochet hook for weaving ends
Gauge: 22 sts & 20 rows in Garter Stitch, (24 sts & 31 rows in the stitch pattern of Chart 4 4” (10 cm), with 5 mm / US 8 needles (after blocking)
Whilst gauge is not essential it can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Finished measurements:
wingspan 61” / 155 cm
Depth 38.5” / 98 cm
Longest Side from tip to tip 67” / 170cm
